Rhythm Fundament
A foundation for life.
Solid knowledge and the craft that lets you play freely and with confidence.
Sound familiar?
Rhythm is the foundation of everything we play. And yet, in my teaching, I see the same thing over and over: many people play patterns — but they don't really understand them.
Where that leads:
Patterns can't be varied freely. Transitions feel shaky. Song structures stay vague and happen by chance rather than by choice. And the moment you're meant to play with others, the hesitation begins.
What it's about
Rhythm isn't a talent you either have or don't. It can be learned — through repetition, understanding and the right guidance.
In 6.5 weeks you build a real foundation: confidence in your playing, freedom in your expression. Not alone in a quiet room, but together with a group walking the same path.
This isn't an online course that gathers dust in your digital archive.
This is an immersion — you dive in, practice every day and grow.
How it works
Daily practice — at your own pace
The exercises are available to you as an online course. No fixed time, no live obligation. You practise whenever it fits your day — in the morning before work, on your lunch break, in the evening on the sofa. You decide.
Duration: 10–15 minutes. And when things get tight? There are mini-exercises of just 5 minutes. Everyone can find those.
7 live group calls — roughly every 10 days
This is where we come together: questions, feedback, practising as a group. Every call is recorded — if you can't make it live, you watch the recording whenever it suits you.
Your accountability partner
You'll be paired with a practice partner. Wonderfully simple: once a day, a short voice message — what did you practise, how does it feel? No call, no meeting. Just staying with it, together.
And who knows — maybe a new friendship grows out of it?
Your daily commitment — honest and realistic
No extra time pressure. No rigid schedule.
Why 6.5 weeks — and not a weekend workshop?
Real change doesn't happen in an afternoon. It happens when practice becomes routine. When you dive a little deeper every day. When a group carries you.
6.5 weeks is long enough to truly anchor new habits — and short enough to stay with it at full energy.
Daily practice becomes routine — and routine stays.
Who is this for?
For you, if …
The group-call dates
Seven live calls across the 6.5 weeks — roughly every 10 days. For this first English-speaking cohort, the exact times are set together with the group, so they work across time zones.
Enrol below to secure your spot — I'll confirm the full schedule with everyone as we begin, and every call is recorded.
Frequently asked questions
10–15 minutes a day — that's the recommended practice time. And if your day is completely full: there are mini 5-minute exercises. Everyone can find 5 minutes.
No problem. I'll show you how to transfer the exercises onto all kinds of everyday objects. Your training continues — wherever you are, even completely without a handpan.
Every call is recorded. Many participants find the recordings just as valuable. You won't miss a thing.
Why I do this
Rhythm isn't a talent — it's repetition and understanding.
I want you to be free.
I originally come from the drums. Technically, moving to the handpan was no obstacle for me. It was only through teaching that I realised how big the gap is that so many people carry with them: it's not feeling they lack — it's rhythmic orientation.
This format grew out of my year-long program, the Handpan Path — designed to serve exactly the needs and wishes of handpan learners. A 6.5-week rhythm-practice program that starts precisely where online courses usually fail: commitment + real rhythm training.
The goal
To develop a deep understanding of how rhythms and patterns are built, how breaks, fill-ins and song structures emerge from them — so that your own playing becomes solid, flexible and confident.
My approach is different
Built on genuine engagement, immersion and classical rhythm training.
Immersion
Many of the skills we want to learn, we give only fragmented attention. But a fundamental understanding needs deep engagement — with fragmented practice phases it's impossible to go deep. This is exactly where the Rhythm Fundament course comes in: it offers an intensive, six-and-a-half-week engagement with the material.
Every day you learn one aspect of rhythm through a 10–15-minute video exercise series. (In your own time.)
Once a week there's a group practice call, where I address your questions, your challenges and how to integrate it all into your playing — as well as the creative, intuitive side.
Repetition is the mother of mastery.
Engagement
The problem: only those who show up every day get the maximum benefit from the exercise series.
The solution: every participant is given a personal partner to walk through each day of the series with, in spirit. Even if you don't practise at the same time or in the same place — you're there for each other as supporters, and check in once a day, by voice message, on whether you're keeping your personal commitment.
An accountability partner is someone you make a firm agreement with to do something — and who kicks your butt when you let it slide.
Classical rhythm training
I guide you step by step into the fundamentals of classical rhythm theory. The daily exercise series is designed so that every day you meet new theoretical content and apply it directly in practice. This way you gradually build a deep understanding of how rhythm fits together.
The beautiful thing for me as a teacher is watching how the basic structures lead, in a simple, logical way, to ever more complex ones. With the right exercises they sink into the subconscious — until rhythm, transitions, fill-ins/breaks and song structures arise from you completely naturally.
What you'll also learn
Counting and varying rhythms: counting, playing and varying any rhythm with a little time and patience — whatever piece you're listening to.
Switching between timings: moving confidently between different timings.
Subdivision & subdivision changes: the even division of a basic pulse into smaller units of time (e.g. quarters → eighths → sixteenths), with all subdivisions following the same time order.
Voices from the last round
34 people walked the last 6.5 weeks with me — this is what they wrote to me, unprompted, afterwards.

I've just been playing right up until now, to calm the inner restlessness (that the course is only just over) 😅 ..and now it's easing again… Really, nothing is over at all… actually it's only just truly beginning 🥰
Thank you again, Nils, for everything you've created and set in motion here… Nudging the little inner demons off your shoulder a little, or sometimes maybe just having to bear them a little….
I think the school rightly carries the name Handpan Schule des Lebens (Handpan School of Life)… now the breathing can begin 🥰
13:27Dear Nils, I just want to give you a bit of personal feedback. The course is amazing. It gave me so much and was so much fun — including the resistance and then letting myself go with it.
On the 4th cycle, with Nils Frahm, something seemed to get triggered in me. At first I couldn't even listen to it all the way through — instantly negative, booooohhhh, seriously, way too abstract for me…… no — after 2 days I listened to it several times and now I find it beautiful.
I've only watched the exercises from the 4th cycle so far; I'll need to work through them intensively afterwards. My heart and head are still busy with the 3rd cycle.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, for this wonderful course. With Petra too, you hit the nail on the head. Warm wishes until Sunday ☀️❣️
09:27Same here 🥰 ..I've become totally addicted. I love Nils's little daily units. The 15 minutes (usually much longer 😅) tend to open up my free evening.
The words that go with them, the ideas and the whole philosophy behind the playing switch my head off for a moment 🥰. I'm hooked on the idea that there'll be a continuation. It's my very own personal time-out.
(Though it's not quite so much just my own time-out anymore, because my son loves to listen too, and in the evening we already almost have a little shared "wind-down routine". And the dog dozes happily next to the handpan too…
I'm completely thrilled and I'm finally playing 🥰
22:12- Before the course I couldn't hold a rhythm, let alone play with my right hand independently of my left at the same time. That, among other things, is what I got to learn in the last few weeks.
- Through daily practice I've lost the shyness; the doubts and thoughts about all the things I still can't do have given way to focusing on everything I've learned in the last few weeks.
- I can only speak for myself as a complete beginner — not just on the handpan but on an instrument in general: for me as a beginner the course was perfect, small bites that were wonderful to work through, sometimes with more and sometimes with less effort. All in all, every day, every lesson a joy.
- My doubts were big at the start about whether it was even possible for me to keep up. Every day I got to discover anew how much it can pay off to stay with it and to believe in yourself.
I thank you from my heart, dear Nils, for all the knowledge and skill you pass on to us, the wisdom you've shared with us, the motivation you've given us every day. I felt seen, understood and truly meant at every moment. Thank you.
14:36I'm totally happy with the course, it's a mixture of: ahhh, that's easy! And: oh my, I have to take a breath and just do it, even when it's challenging. Delightful moments are already developing! 🎶🎵🎶⭐⭐
The partner exchange is worth its weight in gold and so motivating and enriching! 🥰🥰🥰🥰 Many thanks, dear Nils!!! 🙏🙏🙏🙏
14:25I can only echo that! I've learned so much and hope there'll be more courses!
I could never join the calls live, because the times didn't work for me. But you can watch them back and then it's just as if you were there live. 😉
17:25It makes me so happy to notice my progress. It leads to a wish to play and to practise, even when things don't always go smoothly right away. The fifteen minutes sometimes turn into an hour, sometimes even twice an hour a day.
Sadly my head and my ability to concentrate have suffered over the last few years from a lot of painkillers and sedatives. But I've now found my own learning pace; it tends to get tricky in the combination exercise.
But the improvement in my playing and the wonderful creations of sound and thought that emerge exert an energy that inevitably leads back to the instrument and to carrying on — but also to lingering in it and finding joy 🥲🥰🙏😢
10:19Hello dear Nils, first of all, thank you for your kind reply ❤️
Whatever the reason you brought Manfred and me together, it was a stroke of luck. We had so much fun exploring new things together, and also motivating each other whenever the frustration got the better of us.
The course exceeded my expectations by far. In short, I'd call it an "all-round happiness package for setting your handpan playing free". Heartfelt thanks for this amazing course ❤️❤️❤️

My promise
I carry the risk — not you.
I'll deliberately take this to the extreme: walk the 6.5 weeks with me, do the exercises, be there. If, in the end, this course hasn't given you a solid rhythmic foundation – if your playing and your perception while playing haven't noticeably changed – you get 100 % of your money back. No discussion, no fine print.
Your part of the agreement
For this promise to hold, it needs you – fully. You give it your all: you're there for the live calls, you work through every video and you take on my personal guidance – my recommendations, my feedback, the corrections I give you. I walk the whole way with you; but you have to walk it yourself. If you're ready for that, I stand behind you with my whole promise.
